The Age of Sail and subsequent discoveries started approximately in the middle of the fifteenth century and continued until the mid-1800s. It was a time of amazing human achievements and enormous tragedies. The development of ships capable of crossing the oceans led to the exploration of the New World, wars with local nations, and the birth of empires and their enrichment, including slavery. Also, it was a time of great historical figures, like Henry the Navigator, the mastermind behind the Age of Discovery. What was life like on board a sailing ship? Who were the incredible women who sailed the high seas alongside the men? What was the difference between buccaneers and privateers? What meaning did Friday the 13th have for sailors? Fans of history and maritime-themed books will appreciate Sailors of the Cloud Ships by David Fooks.
Sailors of the Cloud Ships is a smooth and captivating read. David Fooks shares many fascinating historical facts. The author doesn’t sugarcoat history and realistically describes many famous historical characters, like Christopher Columbus, Horatio Nelson, and James Cook. The book is a well-balanced source of information, and the author’s in-depth knowledge is impressive. The book is not only educational but also very entertaining. Some readers may not find the chapter about building ships very interesting, but I liked it very much! I couldn’t even imagine how much effort it required to construct these vessels or how high their cost could be. David adds brief and to-the-point biographies of the explorers, captains, and even pirates, like Calico Jack, who enriched the pirate culture with a recognizable symbol. Sailors of the Cloud Ships offers a well-researched and all-encompassing description of the era that had a remarkable impact on the development of humankind.
